The Tennis Europe Development Championships project has remained one of the most important junior tennis support programs in countries with limited sporting resources for nearly three decades. The tournament was created by Tennis Europe in 1996 as part of a development program aimed at giving talented players from developing tennis nations the opportunity to feel part of the international junior tour.

Over the years, many future stars of world tennis have come through this project. At various times, players such as Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Grigor Dimitrov, and Marcos Baghdatis competed in the Development Championships and later became winners of major tournaments and leaders of the world rankings.

Today, the Tennis Europe Development Championships is an invitational tournament, where players can participate only by invitation from Tennis Europe. The main goal of the project is to provide promising juniors from countries with fewer resources the opportunity to compete at a high level and integrate into the international Tennis Europe tournament system. Tennis Europe fully covers participants’ expenses, including accommodation, meals, and tournament organization.

Traditionally, the best young players from each country take part in the project. Each federation sends two boys and two girls, as well as two coach-captains who accompany the team and participate in the tournament’s educational program.

In addition to matches, the Development Championships also has an important educational component. Special workshop sessions are held for coaches, where modern methods of junior training, player development, and experience exchange between specialists from different countries are discussed. This allows coaches not only to observe their athletes in an international tournament environment but also to improve their own methodologies.

The competition takes place over two weeks and includes two consecutive Tennis Europe U14 Category 2 tournaments. Traditionally, the event is held at the Megasaray Tennis Academy in Antalya, one of the largest tennis centers in the region. In 2026, the competition was held from February 27 to March 10.

This season, teams from 10 countries participated:

Moldova

Turkey

Kosovo

North Macedonia

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Armenia

Georgia

Azerbaijan

Albania

Montenegro

In total, 40 players and 18 coaches took part in the competition.

The project is supervised by Olga Lazarchuk, responsible for development at Tennis Europe, along with other representatives of the organization, who closely monitor players’ performances throughout the tournament.

The main sporting reward of the Development Championships is the opportunity to be selected for the prestigious Tennis Europe Touring Team program. Based on the results of the two tournaments, the two best boys and two best girls are chosen to join this team.

Touring Team members have a unique opportunity to go on a sponsored summer tour of the strongest Tennis Europe junior tournaments, lasting about a month starting from mid-July. The team travels and competes alongside experienced international coaches, which is an important step in a young tennis player’s development.

The Moldovan Tennis Federation has been participating in this project for many years, regularly sending the best players of its age category to the tournament.

In 2026, the Moldovan team competed with the following lineup:

Sofia Caniusin

Milena Zanoci

Malai Ildar

Bogdan Vasile Caraus

The team was accompanied by captains Vadim Prunici and Ecaterina Ivașco.

The most successful performance came from Sofia Caniusin, who reached the semifinals, where she lost in a hard-fought three-set match to Turkey’s Asya Ay – 3:6, 6:1, 3:6.

Milena Zanoci and Malai Ildar reached the quarterfinal stage, while Bogdan Vasile Caraus managed to secure one victory before losing to Turkish player Sengul Deniz (2:6, 1:6).

Final singles results of the Moldovan players:

Sofia Caniusin – 4th place

Milena Zanoci – 5th place

Malai Ildar – 8th place

Bogdan Vasile Caraus – 11th place

In doubles, the girls’ team also showed a strong result, reaching the semifinals and demonstrating a high level of play and good team potential.

For young tennis players, participation in the Tennis Europe Development Championships is not only an opportunity to play international matches but also a chance to present themselves to Tennis Europe representatives and tennis scouts, gain valuable competitive experience, and take the next step in their sporting careers.

That is why this project remains one of the most important starting stages on the path of young players toward major international tournaments.
